Every day, tens of thousands of Congolese men and teenage boys scrounge for cobalt deep inside hazardous tunnels.

They spend up to 18 hours crouched in narrow shafts without room to sit upright, inhaling toxic particulates, and filled with dread that at any moment, the tunnel might collapse.

These tunnels collapse often, burying alive everyone inside.

Meanwhile, tech and EV companies continue to offer facile PR statements about protecting the human rights of every participant in their supply chains.

It is time these companies, and the governments pushing the EV transition, did far more to prevent this madness.

PS - LFP batteries are NOT the answer. Lithium mining is another tragedy, and several lithium mines are commencing operations in the DRC this year...with equally appalling conditions.
