It’s not as you say.
Heriot-Watt has already filled its quota of Scottish government-funded places for Scottish-domiciled students for the current intake cycle. As a result, it has closed its clearing process to additional Scottish applicants.
This is the price you pay for no tuition fees.
With no price mechanism to ration places, Scot Gov rations by quotas instead, placing a strict cap on the number of Scots that can go to university. The cap is determined by the size of the budget Scot Gov has allocated to pay for Scottish student places.
It is a very bad system. Scottish universities can take as many English and foreign students as they like (they all come with fees) — and they take a lot. But not as many Scottish students as they like. So many miss out.

Andrew Neil has once again perfectly summed up the rotten, self-serving core of British politics:

“It’s once again politicians using the political system to their advantage, at the expense of the people. Labour did it in Makerfield Nigel Farage is doing it in Clacton.” 🎯

Farage resigns his Clacton seat and forces a by-election to dodge scrutiny over donations, framing it as people versus the establishment. The big parties refuse to contest it, exposing the whole exercise as a cynical farce.

Labour pulled the exact same trick in Makerfield, forcing a vacancy so Andy Burnham could parachute in and challenge Starmer for the leadership. No hand-wringing about democracy or taxpayer costs then. Just naked self-interest.

This perfectly illustrates how politicians of all stripes treat the system as their personal plaything.

These people are not public servants. They are careerists who manipulate by-elections, rules and voters for power and survival. They bend the rules when it suits them and howl with outrage when others do the same. @afneil exposes the hypocrisy. The entire class is in it for themselves, and the public always pays the price.

People haven't gone without heating because of school uniforms.

They've gone without heating because Britain has some of the highest energy costs in Europe.

Expensive energy pushes up the cost of EVERYTHING, food, transport, manufacturing, school uniforms, you name it.

Labour promised to cut household energy bills by £300.

Instead, bills have gone up.

High energy costs are driving Britain's cost of living crisis.
