As a Republican locally elected official, I think I can shed some light on this subject. Your property taxes fund your local public schools, the construction and maintenance of the roads, bridges, and streets that you drive on, your local fire departments, police departments, and sheriff's offices, jails, garbage collection, local emergency management and 911 communications, ambulance services, land deed records recording, marriage license recording, local court and justice system that holds criminals accountable and allows you to sue someone in civil court to recover damages, mental health services, construction and maintenance of recreation areas, and many more services that the average person takes for granted. Now, how frugal your local elected officials are with your property taxes is another story. The real question is...are they getting the most out of every single dollar they levy, and not spending money on things that aren't necessary? Another thing to consider is...school districts levy ad valorem taxes totally separate from counties, cities, and parishes.
