Here’s the reality:

Defunding the Taliban bill only requires 51 votes to pass. Republicans hold 53.

Chairman Risch does not need anyone’s permission to move the bill out of his Foreign Relations Committee. That’s the advantage of chairing it with a majority. He needs 11 votes. There are 12 Republican members in his committee and 10 Democrats.

You’re correct that 60 votes are needed to invoke cloture, end debate, and overcome a potential filibuster. But that’s in the future and it may never get to that point. Keep in mind, the Democrats in the House already voted in favor of this bill as is. It was unanimous. No votes against it.

Best/Worst case scenario: The No Tax Dollars For Terrorists Act is debated in the Senate.

If any Democrat wants to stand on the Senate Floor and DEFEND sending U.S. tax dollars to the Taliban on live television, it would be the greatest political gift imaginable to Chairman Risch and his Republican colleagues. They’d hold the majority for a generation.

All Senate Republicans—especially Chairman Risch—have to do is bring the dadgum bill to the floor for a vote.

When you call back Senator Risch’s team, tell them I said: Yes, I was born in a village in Afghanistan — but I was not born yesterday.
