INF Curtis Mead is headed to the Red Sox in a shocking pre-deadline trade!
Mead, 25, is pretty easily having the best year of his major league career this season, slashing .256/.351/.505 with a 135 wRC+. He's walking at a fantastic clip (12%), limiting strikeouts well (19%), and the quality of contact is pretty exceptional.
Here's what the Red Sox are excited about getting in Curtis Mead...
I) Park Fit. I cannot stress how important it is for the Red Sox to employ RHHs that can pull the ball in the air effectively. Mead does exactly that. His 22.8% Pull Air rate this season is a career-high and I expect that number to tick up a bit over time. Inevitably, fly balls will turn into doubles, and some doubles will turn into home runs simply by launching the ball to his pullside. This is a great park fit.
II) High Quality Approach. Mead's approach at the plate is elite. He rarely chases outside the zone, keeps the swings-and-misses under control, and of course limits K%. Combined with his innate ability to make contact in-zone (92%) and draw an exceptional amount of walks, we're talking about a player that has one of the best processes in the majors.
Mead's 128 Process+ (h/t @pitcherlist) ranks inside the top 10% of qualified MLB hitters.
III) Starting-Caliber Production vs. Both Hands. This shouldn't get overlooked. Despite baseball being a game of matchups, fans often forget about the splits in an emotional time such as the trade deadline. Mead crushes lefties as you'd expect, but he also does a fair amount of damage against righties. His xBA actually indicates a bit more is on the way, while his xwOBA (.344) and whiff rate (18%) are more than solid.

Mead is a 2031 UFA which is another intriguing aspect of this deal. The Red Sox are getting a slugging RH bat for a long time... something they desperately have been searching for, and they're utilizing their abundance of pitching talent to get the job done.
My one knock on the deal is where Mead fits into the puzzle defensively. He's not taking away from Contreras at first base, so I'm going to have to imagine he'll be splitting time between third base and DH. The glove has never been strong, but maybe the Red Sox can find a way to close the margin a bit to at least make him an average defender.
All in all, this is a really solid profile that should instantly impact this offense in a very positive way. Was it an overpay? Absolutely. And losing a stud like Connelly Early is going to sting. But I'm excited about what Mead brings to the table now and even more so about what he could look like in the future. I'm certain we haven't seen his ceiling quite yet.
