Lots of folks shared images of this with us. Turns out it was probably from the launch of the European Space Agency's Ariane 6 heavy lift rocket, which was carrying the Sentinel-1D Earth observation satellite into space.

The launch occurred at 402p Eastern from French Guiana.

Both Lynchburg and Danville tied their record lows this morning, Aug 28th, reaching 51 and 53 respectively. The previous for Lynchburg was 51 in 1986 and for Danville was 53 in 1942.

One of the problems with flash flood warnings in our area is they are really common and generally mean that low water crossings will flood. No one interprets them as "houses that have stood for decades will be washed away." We may need to rethink the types of warnings down here.
