@SiegelCC If you think this will let you escape my weekly phone calls, you’re wrong. You’ve not only made a huge impact on hundreds of your runners, but indirectly you’ve impacted thousands as a result of the guidance you’ve given so many people. Enjoy your new free time!
@toughnessbucket@Mboro_Post She has had great progression over the last four years. That's a sign of a tough and committed athlete with great coaching!
@jmarpdx@laufeninleipzig @JanPEsk In the past, you suggested doing 2x60 minutes at half-marathon pace with two miles easy in-between. Does that apply here?
Your rationale was that the backbone of effective training is regular exposure to very hard work. That workout would be very hard to repeat later that day.
As a coach you must create an effective tension for your athlete’s development. It’s like getting the high wire tension right for the artiste. The tension is created between support and challenge. Too much of either compromises progress. Effective tension is about judgement
Training an athlete is more than putting together a collection of exercises. Do the exercises fit the athlete? Are they appropriate for the level of development & time of the training year. Get past exercises (ingredients), stop being a short order cook and be a master chef.
Coaches: take the uncontrollables and extreme language and shift them:
Turn the word 'win' into 'compete'
Turn the word 'outcome' into 'process'
Turn the word 'must' into 'would like'
Turn the word 'disaster' into 'disappointed'
Engage in a psychologically informed environment!
Please don’t tell me what you can’t do; I am not interested in that. I want to know what you can do and what you will do. Define your possibilities not your limits. Figure out how to be the best you can be and start doing it now!
@WHTrack Nice pick, she had a gritty last 200 meters! As a former teacher up that way, I enjoy seeing what is happening with your cross country and track programs.
Coaching is a process grounded in pedagogy, supported by science, forged in experience, tested in competition. It is something you are with every fiber of your being. It is teaching life through sport because it is about people not training methods. Being a coach is special
@JBurgamy800@KnebworthChris@jmarpdx@Alan_Couzens Training a distance runner is a continuous study and relationship done over many years. It teaches you an infinite amount more than an eight week study with people you’ve never met.
@BiomechMax A coach could give an athlete 60 miles a week and have them begging for more or 30 miles a week and have them begging for mercy. I don't understand the old school mileage obsession and have enjoyed reading your research articles.
