20% TAX FOR ONLINE GAMBLING

South Africa's National Treasury has proposed a new 20% national tax on online gambling profits to address the rapid growth of the industry and combat rising addiction.

Bets have increased to over R1.5-trillion annually, fuelled largely by online platforms. While the tax is primarily aimed at behavioural deterrence, it could also generate an estimated R10-billion annually for the state.

ESKOM IS NOW PROFITABLE

Eskom has reported its first full-year profit in eight years, posting R16-billion after tax for the year ending March 2025.

The result marks an incredible turnaround from the R55-billion loss recorded the previous year.

Debt relief from government, tariff adjustments, stronger sales, and tighter cost controls drove the recovery.

Importantly, power cuts have fallen sharply, with only 13 days of outages compared with 329 the year before.

After years of bailouts and financial strain, the improvement signals new momentum for the state-owned utility and fresh hope for South Africa’s economy as Eskom works to stabilise electricity supply.
