The night before, with his team one win from the World Series, Yandy Diaz said this out loud in Cleveland. "But it all ends tomorrow. We're going to win tomorrow." Tonight he hit a home run and it ended. Here is who said it. He was six years old the last time he saw his father. His father Jorge got himself out of Cuba years before that. He played a little in the Texas organization and spent the rest of it in independent ball, a long way from home. Yandy was six. That was the last time. So understand what the boy was doing when he started trying to leave. He was going after the thing that had already taken his father away from him. They caught him. They put him in jail. That happened more than once. He got out at twenty one, across the water to the Dominican Republic. The crossing took about twelve hours. Cleveland signed him for three hundred thousand dollars, which for a Cuban infielder nobody had scouted is close to nothing. He left his mother behind. Her name is Elsa Maria Fernandez. For years afterward they talked nearly every day, however they could. Here is what he said about deciding to go. "That decision was tough, but at the same time it was easy because I came here to fight for the two of us." Marc Topkin at the Tampa Bay Times is the one who reported how he got out. Now go back to that interview room. He had just put three hits on the board. Then he guaranteed it. Here is what his own manager says about him. "He goes, we go." Now the honest part. Calling a win when you are up in a series and going home is not sticking your neck out, and the other manager barely blinked. Getting out of Cuba to play baseball is a story this sport has told many times. But a boy in Sagua La Grande lost his father to this game when he was six years old. And tonight that man said it would end, and ended it, and then stood on the field with his own son.
