Suicidal thoughts, a detached sense of reality, and increased feelings of aggression towards others...
New research has sounded an alarm for parents thinking of giving their child a smartphone.
It’s a question that troubles many parents as their digitally native children grow older and inevitably ratchet up their requests, particularly as peer pressure levels rise at school.
However, findings in ‘The Mental State of the World in 2023’ published by the Global Mind Project from Sapien Labs which surveyed more than 500,000 people across 71 countries, suggest that the younger a child is given a smartphone the more likely they are to struggle with their mental health in later life.

That was the question I put to Thomas Erikson, best-selling author of ‘Surrounded by Idiots’ as ‘the mentl space’ podcast dove into his personal journey and the challenges he’d faced that led to him writing ‘Surrounded by Setbacks’.
While perhaps best known as ‘the idiot whisperer’, the most-translated Swedish author ‘still alive’, sat down with the pod at the Emirates Literature Festival to discuss his strategies for coping with setbacks, a deep dive on the nature of personal responsibility, and how he defines success.
