I have now read the new US National Security Strategy. What stands out is its clear recognition of the West as a distinct civilisation with material foundations and a shared cultural and philosophical inheritance. It cuts directly against the post-traditional, post-material cosmopolitanism that has dominated European and UK thinking since the end of the Cold War and encouraged a dangerous complacency.

Western civilisation was built on free inquiry, industry, borders, energy density, national sovereignty and cultural self-belief. The new NSS warns that Europe has lost sight of these foundations and that this drift poses a direct threat to the core interests of the United States.

The underlying message to Europe and the UK is very clear.

If you want to be treated as part of the West, behave like it.

If you want US defence commitments, act like a civilisation worth defending.

Personally, I find this all perfectly reasonable. Europe does not have a god-given right to US defence protections. We must demonstrate the will and capacity to defend ourselves if we expects others to stand with us.

For energy policy, my own area of interest, Europe is perfectly free to chase Net Zero. The UK can destroy the North Sea, refuse to exploit our domestic hydrocarbons, import Chinese “clean” tech, and abandon key sectors like primary steel manufacturing and chemicals. But we should not imagine that a Washington increasingly stretched in the Indo-Pacific will be in a position to compensate us for the self-inflicted harm that follows. Remember this fundamental point when hardcore Net Zero fanatics within Labour, the Lib Dem’s and Greens invoke Putin to bash their opponents.

For me, the NSS confirms Bertrand Russell’s insight from nearly 80 years ago: civilisations rise and fall, and the West’s future ultimately depends on those who still understand what made it strong.
