I cannot understand why her loudest supporters are so desperate to absolve her of all responsibility for her actions. Don’t say you’re not, because you are. You are treating her like a child who didn’t know any better.

And back to my initial comment - as a mother if I had had thoughts of harming my children there is nothing you could do that would keep me from putting their safety first. Nothing.

You go to the inpatient program and you stay, you don’t check yourself out early

Here’s the evidence from court - not internet rumor
- Lindsay Clancey did not take any of the medicine as prescribed. She did not give the medicine a chance to work stopping them before you could start receiving benefits

- Lindsay Clancy never reported to her doctors about these intrusive thoughts telling her to harm her children. Doctors can only work with what you report to them

- Lindsay Clancy went to one inpatient program and did not participate
She checked herself out early

- Lindsay Clancy was offered inpatient program options when she went to the ER and the women and family group - she decided not to use those options

Lindsay Clancy only reported a voice command after the murders. Never telling her doctors about it beforehand

With all of that what exactly did you want her doctors to do? Read her mind and have her involuntarily committed?
And if you say yes - then explain why just commit her? Why not every single person who reports any mental illness symptoms? Do we now start committing every single person?

The truth is her doctors could only work with what she told them. That’s not just a psychiatrist issue - every doctor goes off of self report. Yes in certain instances doctors can catch a problem with test - but what tests are there in psychiatry that will tell them the issue/how severe? There’s not one. They don’t have blood test that will tell you what the patient is thinking / feeling

She was not failed. Lindsay Clancy made multiple decisions that led to the murder of her children.

My first was a great sleeper but my second was pretty bad and we did sleep training with both.
just for whatever reason she was a bad sleeper and would still wake up at night at seven months, which to be fair was the tail end of it. It wasn’t for feeding either

My mother parented two young children while battling severe mental illness and psychotic episodes.

My father described her as “meticulous” in the way she shielded us from the fallout of her suffering, including admitting herself to inpatient treatment when necessary.

She was very ill. And she struggled immensely, in ways we didn’t understand until we were much older.

But she would have done anything, suffered anything, if it meant we were alive, safe, and happy. And we are.

She raised us to adulthood, despite all of her challenges; watched us get married, supports and encourages us to be good people. She still fights to this day, for us.

That’s who I want to celebrate.

I want to celebrate the mothers who have fought like hell to protect their children, even from themselves at times.

The ones who understood the sacred mission to protect little minds and little bodies, and pursued their mission relentlessly until it was completed.

I'm rewatching Dr. Phillip Resnick's testimony from yesterday, and I keep coming back to the same question: Does #LindsayClancy's claim that she suddenly heard a command voice actually fit with the rest of the evidence?

Resnick is Lindsay's own expert and a nationally recognized forensic psychiatrist. He testified that it would be very rare for postpartum symptoms to first appear eight months after giving birth. That makes what Lindsay says happened on January 24, 2023 even more important.

According to Lindsay, she suddenly heard a command voice after Patrick left the house on errands that she helped coordinate. The voice supposedly told her that if she didn't do what it said, neither she nor the children would be safe. But I've struggled with the logic of that from the beginning. If the voice was threatening the safety of her children, why would obeying it mean killing the very children she was supposedly trying to protect?

ADA Buchanan then confronted Resnick with his own writing about malingering in Faking It. Resnick has written about the importance of a concurrent delusion when evaluating homicidal command hallucinations. As he explained, if a voice suddenly tells you to kill your mother, your moral fiber should cause you to hesitate. But if you also have a delusion that your mother is an evil wizard, you are more likely to act on the command because the hallucination is consistent with an existing delusional belief.

Where is that concurrent delusion with Lindsay?

There is no evidence that Lindsay believed Cora, Dawson or Callan were evil, dangerous or posed a threat to her or anyone else. In fact, Resnick categorized the killings as altruistic filicide, meaning he believes Lindsay killed her children out of a distorted sense of love. She wanted to die and believed the children would be better off dead than alive without her.

It raises another question for me. If Lindsay's underlying belief was that her children were better off dead because she intended to die, then how much explanatory work is this alleged command voice really doing?

Buchanan also made an important point on cross about resistance. When people hear voices telling them to do something as horrific as killing their children, they can resist those initial commands, seek help or take steps to protect the children from themselves. Andrea Yates is an good example. Before ultimately killing her five children while profoundly psychotic, Yates repeatedly sought hospitalization and attempted suicide. Her history documented an escalating struggle with severe mental illness before the murders.

Lindsay's story is very different. According to her, this was the first and only time she ever heard a command voice. She didn't call Patrick, her mother, a doctor or 911. She didn't try to get herself away from the children or get the children somewhere safe. Instead, after Patrick left on errands she helped arrange, she allegedly heard a command voice for the first time and acted on it.

We're being asked to accept a previously unreported command hallucination as part of the explanation for why Lindsay killed her three children. It is absolutely fair to test that claim against her clinical history, behavior before and during the killings, what she actually believed about the children, and even the principles described by her own expert.

The more of that evidence I hear, the harder it is for me to believe Lindsay Clancy was hearing voices.

I think the Right needs to take a long, hard look at the messages being pushed on social media right now.

We are months away from the midterms, and women are watching.

You cannot claim to value mothers while mocking, minimizing, or completely dismissing the very real mental health crises women can experience after giving birth. You cannot talk about protecting families while showing so little compassion, understanding, or concern for postpartum depression, postpartum psychosis, and maternal mental healthcare.

As mothers, we know pregnancy and childbirth do not end when the baby is born. Our bodies change. Our hormones change. Our brains and emotional experiences can change. And sometimes women become desperately, frighteningly unwell.

Acknowledging that does not mean abandoning accountability. It means having enough emotional intelligence to understand that compassion and accountability can exist in the same sentence.

I have always voted conservative. But some of the vile things I have watched conservative voices say about women and mental illness have pushed me straight into political homelessness.

I refuse to surrender my compassion just to belong to a political tribe.

If your politics require you to stop seeing the humanity in people who are suffering, I want no part of them.

Maybe it’s time we stopped asking whether someone is Right or Left and started asking whether what they’re saying is compassionate, reasonable, and true.

I am going to need X to brace itself. I have been following the Lindsay Clancy trial since the night it happened. There is a VERY HIGH chance that she is found not guilty by reason of insanity and sentenced to a mental hospital, or it is a hung jury. This is a hometown tragedy and no one here is out for blood. Patrick Clancy raised well over a million dollars right after the murders and most assumed it was going to Lindsay's defense. We do not have the death penalty. We stopped hanging witches in the 1690's.

The prosecutor is ill equipped and Kevin Reddington is the BEST criminal defense attorney in the state. He famously got Whitey Bulger's girlfriend a sweetheart deal after 16 years on the run with him and has been involved in every major case ever since. Hubby has strict instructions to call him and him alone if I ever find myself in a heap of trouble.

I do not say this to make you mad, I say this to again ask yourself if you are helping the discourse. We can weep for the children who are the ultimate victims in all this, but we also must acknowledge that this woman begged for help from McLean, the best Harvard mental hospital in the world. Instead of receiving actual care, she was put on a massive cocktail of competing prescriptions and sent home worse than she came in.

Our medical establishment's answer to severe postpartum psychosis and bipolar disorder is just throwing pills at the wall to see what sticks. It is a catastrophic failure. While thankfully most cases do not wind up like this, there is so much we do not understand about the brain because our mental health system is woefully undeveloped and completely reliant on a pharmaceutical band aid approach.

We need to be looking for real answers. Lindsay will quite literally never walk free and nothing will bring those beautiful children back to life. She will either be at a state hospital or a state prison. Meanwhile, let us look to our wildly ineffective psychiatric care system and demand better before someone else falls through the cracks. No matter how many cruel and unnecessary accusations you lob on X, NO ONE does not weep over this case and NO ONE ever wants to see this situation ever happen again.

I’ve been a prosecutor over 20 yrs. I’ve exclusively handled child murders the past 10 yrs. I became a prosecutor because I was abused as a child and standing up and fighting for children is something I wanted to do in my life & something I believe God wants me to do. It is a hard job. But I’m never going to stop fighting for justice for innocent children.

I truly can’t remember a time in my life where I saw a crowd of people cheering on, waving, smiling, and taking selfies and videos of a child murderer. I had someone yesterday respond to one of my tweets by saying they hope Roxanne (my wife and mother of our children) doesn’t get depressed and kill our children - yeah that person was immediately blocked. But, that really, really bothered me. What is going on in our society? You can disagree, even on social media, without being sick and cruel. It’s called being an adult and basic human.

Cora, Dawson and Callan were murdered by the person who is supposed to protect them and keep them safe - their mom. The last thing each child saw was their mom killing them. Also, strangulation takes time - it’s not instant. Think about that. Whatever the “why” is, this isn’t something to line up and cheer about.

Also, trying to understand “why” this happened isn’t a bad thing. In child murder cases, this is what the jury always wants an answer to - why would a mom or dad or step mom or step dad kill their own child? We rarely get the answer- sadly.

Also, most of us, me included, want to do things and implement things so these tragedies don’t happen again. Our ultimate goal should be protecting children and preventing these things from happening, But lining up on a road by the courthouse to cheer on someone who admitted to murdering her three children - I have no words for how utterly sick that is. There are alot of people who really should be ashamed.
