Elyria Police Fatally Shoot Armed Robbery Suspect After Chase and Hostage Situation

John Johnson, 37, was taken down by an Elyria police officer after leading officers on a high-speed chase following an armed robbery outside an AT&T store involving a Brinks armored truck.

Police say Johnson forced the Brinks driver into the vehicle, stole cash, and fled, reaching speeds over 100 mph before spike strips stopped his vehicle.

After exiting the crashed vehicle, Johnson ran into a nearby apartment complex.

He took a woman and two of her four children hostage at gunpoint inside the apartment.

An officer pursuing him kicked through the door and shot Johnson inside the residence.
