Between studying for the LSAT, taking the LSAT, applying to schools, getting admitted, starting school, making it through three years, studying for the Bar exam, taking and passing the Bar exam, applying to jobs, getting employed, and remaining employed long enough to be too valuable to lose your job to AI, you’re looking at a roughly five-year timeline—assuming you start today.

In five years, I predict we’ll be leaving the “AI helps me be a better, faster lawyer” phase and into the “oh shit oh fuck” phase.

Hiring will constrict and firms will shrink, and law students or young associates will feel like CS majors do today.

That said, if you have a passion for the law and can’t see yourself doing anything else, then do it.

If AI takes your job, it’ll probably also take the alternative job you weren’t passionate about either (assuming you’re going from knowledge work to knowledge work).

So might as well spend this time pursuing something difficult that you care about. You’ll grow enormously, which has value in and of itself, and you might even end up being succesful if (1) AI progress slows (not necessarily unlikely given recent sentiment from top labs), and (2) you are serious about leveraging AI in everything you do in this journey.

But yeah, at this point I would not recommend getting into debt.

🚨 UPDATE: Port Angeles High School (Washington) Principal Mace Gratz has been placed on leave.

This comes after the school faced major backlash for allowing students wearing bloody “FREEDOM” shirts and mocking Charlie Kirk to remain at school throughout the day.

One student, a trans who pretends to be a boy, posted public and now viral TikToks appearing to mock Kirk from inside the school. In comments, the student said they would have been fine if “MAGA” people online had not complained and said they were later suspended for three days. She showed no remorse for her actions.

My original post reached more than 6 million views, hundreds contacted the school, and parents in the district pushed back.

Pressure works. Parents speaking up works. Public accountability works.

Also, for the morons in the back, reposting public video and comments is not “doxxing”, no matter how hard you attempt to change the definition. Pound sand.

I’m a lawyer and we’re absolutely fucked within the next 5-10 years. I’m also an accelerationist, so this isn’t AI hate.

“AI is a tool” is true, but only while we’re in this brief equilibrium of AI being useful enough to be helpful but not enough to take over a case.

The last remaining bottlenecks (longer time-horizon tasks and context windows, organizational adoption, etc.) are quickly widening.

Notably, intelligence is no longer a bottleneck: these models are already smarter and more efficient than many partners.

Your mom is busy because we’re still early. But it’s worth repeating: we’re fucked soon enough.
