Tourette Syndrome campaigner John Davidson issued a statement after his racial slur at the BAFTA Film Awards:
“I appreciated the announcement to the auditorium in advance of the recording, warning everyone that my tics are involuntary and are not a reflection of my personal beliefs. I was heartened by the round of applause that followed this announcement and felt welcomed and understood in an environment that would normally be impossible for me. In addition to the announcement by Alan Cumming, the BBC and BAFTA, I can only add that I am and always have been deeply mortified if anyone considers my involuntary tics to be intentional or to carry any meaning. I have spent my life trying to support and empower the Tourette’s community and to teach empathy, kindness and understanding from others and I will continue to do so. I chose to leave the auditorium early into the ceremony as I was aware of the distress my tics were causing.”
John Davidson says he is “deeply mortified” that anyone thought his involuntary tics were “intentional or to carry any meaning.”
Full statement:
“I wanted to thank BAFTA and everyone involved in the awards last night for their support and understanding and inviting me to attend the broadcast. I appreciated the announcement to the auditorium in advance of the recording, warning everyone that my tics are involuntary and are not a reflection of my personal beliefs.
I was heartened by the round of applause that followed this announcement and felt welcomed and understood in an environment that would normally be impossible for me. In addition to the announcement by Alan Cumming, the BBC and BAFTA, I can only add that I am, and always have been deeply mortified if anyone considers my involuntary tics to be intentional or to carry any meaning.
I was in attendance to celebrate the film of my life, I SWEAR, which more than any film or TV documentary, explains the origins, condition, traits and manifestations of Tourette Syndrome. I have spent my life trying to support and empower the Tourette’s community and to teach empathy, kindness and understanding from others and I will continue to do so. I chose to leave the auditorium early into the ceremony as I was aware of the distress my tics were causing.”
So a man invited to the BAFTA’s as inspiration for a film demonstrating the horrific hostility and lack of understanding people with Tourette’s face… is now facing horrific hostility and a lack of understanding over his Tourette’s?
Have I got that right? 🤦
Do you want to know John Davidson? This is the man people are accusing to be a racist with their ablest rhetoric. He came to the BAFTAs to celebrate the success of the movie based on his life. His illness crippled him throughout the ceremony and made him say horrific things.
@LorX0X@juhmeer Do yourself a favour and do research about John Davidson and I Swear before continuing to spout utter nonsense. John literally shows what Tourette’s is and who he really is behind this crippling disorder. Your uneducated and horrific takes just make you look bad.
@nico_2121276@juhmeer I urge you to watch this movie or the documentary about John. He literally tells his dog to run out into traffic, his Tourette’s takes the subconscious worst thought and makes him say it involuntarily. John is one of the nicest men and this stigma is horrible to watch unfold.
We don’t usually comment on this but the people stating that John Davidson’s involuntary tick was purposeful should watch ‘I Swear’ and understand this disorder further. Your narrow mindedness, and ableist traits are exactly why the film was made, to inform people like you.
@LucaGuadagnegro@Tootsleeve@Variety The fact that ‘I Swear’ was nominated and that the story is about John Davidson is enough for everyone attending and those who have seen the film to understand. You’re saying he shouldn’t be there to see the film about his life win? This is narrow mindedness and ablest.

@AgentP22 What this bill does is stop discrimination of protected groups. If you have a problem with this, then may I suggest you cease tweeting about breaches of law, when you don’t respect basic human rights. Hypocrisy at its best it seems. Also all Tories are cunts, including you.
@AgentP22 Production manager from Birmingham here - Scotland has the most accepting audiences in the world ESPECIALLY at the fringe. If you want radicalist right wing propaganda, there’s videos of Hitler’s Nuremberg rally to keep you entertained.
