In fairness, a long term of 6 years until he's 40 at 18.5m-20m a year is definitely absurd unless he's able to keep up his production into that very last year.

It's a huge gamble. He deserves the contract now, but in a few years, it'll be really difficult...

In all honesty, telling Kucherov, your star player and a top 3 player itl, that the max you'd offer is 4x15 compared to the 6x20 he asked, I'd feel disrespected too.

I feel that Kuch would even take a 6x18.5. But only offering 75% of what he asked and for less term is crazy..

@AdarshBala17 @BoltsBreakdown Also, you'd find it really difficult to find suitable replacements that can provide the same productivity as they do for the same price.

And as I stated underneath my original comment, the time to extend Vasy is also coming up next year, and cap must be saved for that as well.

@AdarshBala17 @BoltsBreakdown Interesting. I'm curious to see what his asking price was though. If it was the maximum AAV or close then the point still stands. Don't get me wrong, Kucherov is DEFINITELY worth that amount, but when you contextualize it within our cap framework, we just can't afford it.

@AdarshBala17 @BoltsBreakdown How does sacrificing depth and younger players keep us in contention? The players I listed are current pieces making impacts in every game. You pay him the amount which takes up all the cap and then what? Bring up the AHL team and pray Kuch gets 200+ points instead?

If it turns out JBB seriously lowballed him, then yes, we can blame JBB. But this time I think Kucherov might've been asking for more than we can afford.

@BoltsBreakdown People need to realize what JBB had to work with. We simply don't have the cap space to give him what I've been hearing unless we trade some players and we don't re-sign some like James, Geekie, Goncalves, Holmberg, and D'Astous.

JBB definitely wanted him to stay, end of story.
