Better still, you can use eGFR which is the gold standard.

Things to look out for:

1. Hemolysis

2. Wrong sample bottle (e.g K3EDTA).

Hemolysis:

Hemolysed samples (which can occur during venous puncture or vigorous shaking of sample bottles) elevates potassium. This is because, during hemolysis, extra cellular potassium leaks out to the plasma fluid and in turn causes an elevation.

Wrong Sample bottle:

Sample bottles like K3EDTA contaminates electrolytes (specifically potassium and calcium). EDTA chelates calcium, thereby crashing calcium and ionised calcium results and inturn increases the value of potassium because of it's presence in the anticoagulant.

Always use the right sample bottles (e.g lithium heparin) for electrolyte analysis to avoid situations like this.

How to reduce the pain:

✅ Use pain relief medications as advised by your healthcare provider.

✅ Place a warm compress on your lower tummy.

✅ Do some light exercise.

✅ Reduce anything that could be stressful.

✅ Eat a balanced diet.
