how the hack worked:

1/ when you set up a cold wallet, it generates a seed phrase for you (12-24 random words that act as your password).

these words must be chosen completely randomly (true randomness creates more possible combinations than there are atoms in the universe, so no computer can crack your phrase).

2/ cold card devices had a bug that meant the seed phrases it generated users weren’t completely random.

seed phrases were generated by math formulae that relied on inputs like the device’s internal clock and serial number etc.

3/ because the seed phrases weren’t truly random, hackers could crack them much more easily.

they used powerful computers to calculate and recreate the predictable seed phrases, giving them access to the cold wallets (without ever having to access them physically).

once the attacker found the seed phrase, they could drain the wallet in minutes.

cold wallets are the safest storage option, but never blindly trust a device's internal software to generate your seed phrase.
