As a Ugandan, it fills me with pride to see an illustrious son of our nation carry a lifetime of global service, a fierce commitment to the vulnerable, and a deep passion for justice to the world stage.

For years, many of us have followed with great respect, Ambassador Olara Otunnu’s incredible track record at the United Nations.

His work championing human rights and protecting children in armed conflict is exactly the kind of leadership the global community desperately needs right now. True leadership is measured by integrity, vision, and an unwavering dedication to peace and justice.

We can not forget the historical injustice when the Museveni regime vindictively denied him an endorsement for this very position years ago. They blocked him for simply refusing to stay silent about the atrocities they were committing against our people. Perhaps if he had risen to that position at the time, the world would be fairer, more just, and more peaceful.

Central to his vision is a profound passion for genuine multilateral reform, where international institutions must evolve beyond mere arenas of superpower politics to become true instruments of equity, accountability, and shared prosperity for all nations.

I hear some citizens who are raising tough questions about why the regime has suddenly changed its mind to endorse him now. Your scepticism is understandable, given what the bloodthirsty regime is doing to our people. And I know Ambassador Otunnu to be a man of deep humility who welcomes free speech and receives your concerns with grace. We can all bank on his long-term, proven integrity and hope that when he rises to become the world’s top diplomat, he will never turn a blind eye to the ongoing struggle for freedom in his own motherland. As he has consistently acknowledged, Uganda faces dark spots that need fixing.

Ambassador Otunnu has my full solidarity and prayers as he carries our collective aspirations for a fairer world to the global stage.

An Open letter opposing the appointment of Mr @Olara_Otunnu as UN Secretary General.
We strongly oppose the potential appointment of Mr @Olara_Otunnu as UN Secretary General. Despite residing in Uganda, he has consistently remained silent regarding the systemic killings, Abductions and torture of innocent Ugandan citizens. We call upon the @UN and @UNGeneva to look closely at the current crisis. Prominent figures including Dr KIZZA BESIGYE, human rights lawyer ERIAS LUKWAGO, Hon MUWANGA KIVUMBI, SAM MUGUMYA, ALEX WAISWA MUFUMBIRO, EDDIE MUTWE among others are currently unjustly imprisoned. Meanwhile, opposition leaders like President KYAGULANYI SENTAMU (@HEBobiwine) Hon SEMUJJU NGANDA, SALAAM MUSUMBA, and LINA ZEDRIGA have been forced into exile. Mr @Olara_Otunnu claims to be a leader for global justice, he must answer these questions. Can he explain why these leaders were forced to flee the country,or does he claim ignorance? Most importantly when did he last visit Dr kizza Besigye during his two years of imprisonment, or speak out against his detention?
A leader who ignores atrocities in his homeland is unfit to lead the United Nations (@UN ).

I’ve seen some people from Northern Uganda respond to my rejection of Ambassador Olara Otunnu’s @UN bid with insults and tribal sentiments.

Let me make this clear: my position is not about tribe, religion, or politics. It is about principle.

Otunnu once spoke boldly about the suffering of his people—the killings, rape, destruction and atrocities committed during the war. Today, the same Museveni government he once criticised is endorsing his bid for UN Secretary-General.

That contradiction deserves scrutiny. Victims cannot be remembered when it is convenient and forgotten when a political position is on the table.

Let us stop defending people simply because they come from our tribe. Think beyond tribal loyalty. Question power. Demand consistency. Stand with the victims.

My position remains unchanged: I REJECT OLARA OTUNNU’S BID.

I would like to see Olara Otunnu lose his bid for UN Secretary-General. Stay with me for a second.

I don’t oppose Otunnu because he is Ugandan. I don’t oppose him because I hate Uganda. And certainly not because I cannot take pride in seeing a Ugandan aspire to one of the world’s most prestigious international positions.

My objection is much more fundamental.

I worry that Otunnu’s bid for the UN’s top job could become an opportunity to whitewash, sanitize or soften the record of the Museveni government a government whose decades in power have been accompanied by allegations of repression, political violence, abuses and impunity.

And this is where Otunnu’s own record and relationship with Uganda matter.

He has been in Uganda. He has seen what has happened. He knows the political reality. Yet, when confronted with the conduct of Museveni’s government and, increasingly, the political role of his son Muhoozi, Otunnu has too often appeared to retreat into the comfort of intellectual language, diplomatic semantics and carefully constructed platitudes.

For me, that is not enough.

You cannot aspire to become the world’s chief diplomat while avoiding the uncomfortable truths happening in your own backyard.

Uganda does not need another international figure who can make authoritarianism sound respectable. It needs people willing to name abuse, confront impunity and defend democratic principles even when doing so is politically inconvenient.

So yes, I would like to see Olara Otunnu lose this particular bid.

Not because he is Ugandan.

But because I believe the UN Secretary-General should be someone whose commitment to human rights and accountability is beyond political ambiguity including when the uncomfortable questions involve their own country.
