#Ethiopia: #TPLF calls for return of #Tigray Council, signals restructuring of interim administration

The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has called for the reinstatement of the Tigray Regional Council and indicated the need to restructure the region’s interim administration, citing what it described as deteriorating conditions and stalled implementation of the #Pretoria Peace Agreement.

In a statement issued following its Central Committee meeting held from April 15–16, 2026, the party said “the Council elected by more than 2.8 million people should return to its work,” describing it as the primary source of sovereign authority in the region.

The statement signals a potential shift in the governance arrangement under the Tigray Interim Administration, which has been in place after the cessation of hostilities agreement. While stating that ultimate authority lies with the Council, the TPLF said the executive branch of the regional government should also be restructured to become “more effective.”

The move comes amid growing internal and external pressure on the interim setup, with the TPLF claiming that existing institutions have not fully served the interests of the people of Tigray.
