@SinkUrinator @mattbilinsky@AriDrennen I mean you say that that is public consensus but as we can see the public is pretty fiercely split on the issue. Describing this as an issue as activists vs ‘the public’ is disingenuous.
@SinkUrinator @mattbilinsky@AriDrennen I’d argue the trans-exclusive use of the word ‘woman’ is inherently a prescriptivist take, seeking to ‘preserve language’ in the face of rapid cultural change.
@SinkUrinator @mattbilinsky@AriDrennen Ok cool, fair enough. I do take issue however with the ‘natural/over generations point’ when it comes to linguistic change. Semantic broadening and narrowing can occur very quickly. The rate of change has also grown exponentially since the advent of social media.
@mattbilinsky@AriDrennen pal we called all children ‘girls’ in the middle ages before deciding that we needed specific gendered terms (a development that came from
christianity).
Language is a product of culture - it changes when culture does.
@EfcWorcester@EvertonNewsFeed@jac_talbot I mean they’re Black Italian forwards, doesn’t mean they’re anything alike. Like thinking we should be wary of signing Messi because we once had Stracqualursi.
despite having forsaken pretty much all of my northern heritage at this point there is still a primal bit of me that makes me a bit *too* giddy when I hear a Stone Roses track. pretty much ingrained and i must make peace with it
