@McFaul The problem is that people like Putin often see themselves are “Russia” and integral to its survival . Many dictators see themselves this way. As if they are the state. So it’s a little reassuring and seems like a position any country would take but the wildcard is still Putin.

@lindyli If we are to accept that Gini and Clarence are to treated as separate entities then if Clarence doesn’t pay for the sins of his wife, conversely Gini should NOT get the the benefit of his position. You can’t have it both ways. Either they are treated individually or not.
