After completing "Some Like it Hot" (1959), Billy Wilder wanted to make a film on the idea he had from around the 1940s. He wanted to make a film about the unseen character in David Lean's "Brief Encounter" (1945) who loans the apartment for the rendezvous of the main characters.
He always thought there was a funny and touching character there to explore. He wanted to work with Jack Lemmon again after "Some Like it Hot" and thought he would be perfect for this role. According to Jack Lemmon, he was offered the role by Wilder, when they were on the way to a private screening of "Some Like it Hot" in a car.

Michael Mann's MANHUNTER.
THE FINAL CUT.
StudioCanal is unleashing a brand new 4K restoration in select US theaters on July 24.
"The ultimate immersive version" of the film.
Details for the upcoming Manhunter (1986) 40th Anniversary 4K UHD
A new 4K scan of the original 35mm negative (with a few shots from an interpositive) was conformed and digitally restored at L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna. Both the theatrical version and the UHD HDR & SDR video color gradings were performed by Stefan Sonnenfeld at Company 3 in Los Angeles under Mann’s supervision. Sound restoration was done at Audio Mechanics from an original 35mm magnetic 6-track printmaster to release a new 5.1 mix by Luke Schwartzweller at Fox. Technical coordination and deliveries were managed by L’Immagine Ritrovata. The project was supervised by Becca Mann and StudioCanal’s Jean-Pierre Boiget and Delphine Roussel.
This new 4K Final Cut, overseen by Mann, “enhances the film’s depth, visual clarity and sound, offering audiences the ultimate immersive version,”
“40 years ago – though armed with Thomas Harris’ excellent novel, “Red Dragon” – its subject matter, the profiling of serial killers, as well as being shocking and raw, was unknown,” says Mann. “When adapting, I wanted to make its storytelling deliver audiences into a certain state of threat and emotional engagement… We have carefully remastered the film to try to evoke that mood and intensity, heightened with audio sourced from the original 5.1 35mm analog masters. This latest iteration is that version of the film with which I’m most satisfied.”
Mann’s goal in creating a new version of the movie was to not only restore it to its former glory but to utilize new technology to create an experience as visceral for audiences in 2026 as the original was in 1986. “If the picture was left the way it was, it would be interesting, but you’d feel some distance,” Mann said. “You’d be observing it somewhat. I’m more interested in its original intent impacting you the same way it may have in 1986 … that is, to bring you into it again in the original way.”
Manhunter: The Final Cut hits US theaters on July 24 and UK cinemas on September 25, before arriving on home video formats at an unspecified date

Terrence Malick's "Days of Heaven" (1978) wasn't a commercial success: its box office gross of $3,446,749 was only slightly more than $3 million, the amount it cost to make the film. Charles Bluhdorn, who ran Gulf + Western, the parent company of Paramount, was so impressed with the movie that he offered $1 million for Malick's next project, no matter what the movie was.
Malick accepted—even though he was worn out. However, since Malick was exhausted and bruised after filming "Days of Heaven", he retreated to Paris with his girlfriend, Michie Gleason. It took 20 years for him to make his next film, "The Thin Red Line" (1998).
