John Madden was EA's third choice for the game that sold 130 million copies. Joe Montana said no. Joe Kapp wanted royalties. So EA's founder boarded an Amtrak train, because Madden refused to fly, and spent three days pitching a retired coach on a computer game.

Madden said yes for one reason. He thought it could teach people football.

Then EA told him the computers of 1984 could only fit seven players a side on screen. Madden told them that wasn't football. Real 11-on-11 or no deal, even if it took years. It did. John Madden Football didn't ship until 1988.

The refusal turned out to be the whole franchise. Realism was the moat. By 1993 the NFL licensed it, and to this day it's the only licensed NFL video game series in existence.

Here's the part that stings. Trip Hawkins offered Madden as much EA stock as he wanted at $7.50 a share. Madden waved him off. "I gave you my time. I'm not giving you my money." Ten years later the stock hit $70. He called it the dumbest thing he ever did.

Didn't matter. In 2005 EA paid him $150 million for his name in perpetuity, plus annual royalties. The name outlasted the share price.

And the ending nobody remembers. A knee injury ended Madden's playing career before he took a single NFL snap. The man who never played a down put his name on the game 130 million people bought so they could.
