There are four dogmas proclaimed by the Church about the Blessed Virgin Mary. Each one serves to safeguard and illuminate an essential truth about Jesus Christ, her Son.
The first dogma is the Divine Motherhood, also called Theotokos. Mary is the Mother of God, a truth defined at the Council of Ephesus in 431. This reveals that Jesus is truly God and truly man, one divine Person with two natures. Because the eternal Son of God was born of Mary, she is rightly called the Mother of God, protecting the reality of the Incarnation.
The second dogma is the Perpetual Virginity of Mary. Mary remained a virgin before, during, and after the birth of Jesus. This reveals that Jesus is the only-begotten Son of God, conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and not by any human father. Her virginity underscores the miraculous and unique divine origin of Jesus Christ.
The third dogma is the Immaculate Conception. From the first moment of her existence, Mary was preserved from all stain of original sin by a special grace. This reveals that Christ alone is the Savior and Redeemer of humanity. Mary's sinless state depends entirely on the grace won by Christ's future merits, demonstrating that all humanity requires redemption, yet underscoring the fullness of Christ's redemptive work, which begins with Mary's exceptional preservation from original sin.
The fourth dogma is the Assumption. At the end of her earthly life, Mary was taken body and soul into heavenly glory. This reveals that Christ is the conqueror of sin and death and guarantees our bodily resurrection. Mary's Assumption is the first fulfillment of the complete redemption that Jesus promises to all who belong to Him.
Together, these dogmas are profoundly Christ-centered. They do not exalt Mary for her own sake but rather protect and deepen our understanding of the Incarnation, the Redemption, and the final victory won by Jesus Christ.
