Day 5 of kelp surveys, now in SE Scotland near St Abbs. Very lush and extensive kelp stands, gazillions of juvenile fish and calm seas and sunny skies. The fieldwork gods are still on our side (for now) 🏴 🌱 🌊 ☀️ 🐠 🧪
Amazing to finally have our own scientific dive team @thembauk , in collaboration with @TritoniaDiving . First day of training and familiarisation complete, bring on kelpy science ! 🌱 🌊 ☀️ 🤿
Popped into @PlymouthMarine today to help out in the lab! First time at the bench for over a year... subculturing the algae collection. Still got the old skills!!! 💪
Preliminary results of my S. polyschides survey and some future project plans shown in my poster presentation at the #IPC2021 (Symposium 13: Ocean Global Change)
Come join our awesome @BlueCommunities@SW_EEP@plymuni GCRF_PISCES teams working with me on exciting socio-economic-ecological research in SE Asia and SW England! We are recruiting 2 research fellows (3 years) to work on ocean & coastal systems. https://t.co/hIRdZXWP1w
Brilliant to see Tim @CornishSeaweed talking about our seaweed farming work alongside so many inspiring voices & familiar faces in @ClimateCornwall film 💪🌱💙 @thembauk
@SeaweedSoph has completed her first year working with #TeamSeaweed ... we look forward to hearing more about all the amazing things seaweed can do for marine biodiversity over the coming years! Well done Sophie 🌱 🌊
1 year ago today I started my #PhD on the environmental benefits of #seaweed cultivation!
BIG THANK YOU to my great supervisors, research group and farmers who have made such an otherwise strange year so fun🌱🌊
Sorry I don't have nice photos of you all!
Through the year with #Saccorhiza polyschides: #Fieldwork pictures from the same sample site in July vs. November (early this week with the #BEECH team). S. poly is a pseudo-annual species and lives for about 12-18 months 🌱🌊⏰ #kelp#seaweed
Fun week setting up seaweed cultivation trials with a new-to-us species, Himanthalia elongata (AKA thongweed or sea spaghetti- nutritious and delicious) - part of long term collab with @CornishSeaweed . Hopefully some new kelp (well fucoid) babies soon 🌊🌱☀️👶🍝
PLEASE RETWEET!
COME JOIN OUR FANTASTIC TEAM!!!

Lovely to see Asparagopsis armata growing so well in the lab (thanks to @Fizzy_Storm!). This gorgeous red filamentous seaweed (aka harpoon weed) produces bromoform which inhibits methane release when eaten by cows! Mooovelous work by this seaweed! 🐄🐂🥴
Our new paper in Biodiversity & Conservation examines understory algal assemblages in kelp forests along >1000 km of UK coastline. These assemblages are rich and abundant, and important as food source and habitat….. https://t.co/aBqsL2u0MJ
Happy #worldalgaeday!! 🌊🌱 Despite the lack of #seaweed emoji there are estimated >11 000 species globally. These unsung heroes provide us with food, fertilisers, biofuels, oxygen, carbon dioxide sinks, coastal protection and habitat for thousands of species world-wide 🌍
