I'm a progressive independent (former elected D). Let's all get real. The reason the wealthiest don't pay taxes is that they own YOU and your colleagues. They bought the best tax policy they could afford through campaign contributions. Nothing more than bread and circuses here.

@Poeticearthling It's also highly dependent upon the source of the income. Investment income can be put into a corporation, or trust, and taxed as dividends taken over time, only as those distributions are withdrawn. These strategies are familiar to me, as I have benefited from these instruments.

@Poeticearthling It's relatively simple to gift vast sums/skirt estate tax exemptions entirely. Ask any tax attorney. Not only that, but even the charitable dodges pay the person dodging taxes a salary for life. Some are even revocable. The tax code was written by lobbyists for the wealthiest.

@Poeticearthling I must disagree. It would be true, in theory. But most individuals don't make enough money to itemize deductions, or pay a "creative" CPA to use the tax code to their advantage. Some tax dodges can benefit nonprofits though, like a CRT, or DAF, or a foundation. 1/
