In the 1500s, a Mapuche chieftain warrior named Galvarino had his hands cut off by the Spanish after the Battle of the Lagunillas in south-central Chile.

According to legend, after Galvarino lost his left hand, he casually offered his right hand and then asked for death.

The governor, García Hurtado de Mendoza, decided to free him along with the other hundred or so mutilated warriors as a warning to the rest of the Mapuche.

Upon returning home, Galvarino met with Caupolicán, the leader of the Mapuche, and asked for another opportunity to seek justice. He was given his own men and fastened lances to his stumps. In the Battle of Millarapue, Galvarino once again fought against Governor Mendoza.

According to the Spanish historian Jerónimo de Vivar, Galvarino is said to have urged his men to continue fighting despite the superior weapons and armor of the Spanish. He claimed to have shouted, "Nobody is allowed to flee but to die because you die defending your mother country!"

The Mapuche warriors were defeated once again. When the Spaniards offered to spare his life if he joined their side, Galvarino supposedly replied, "I would rather die than live like you, and I'm only sorry that my death will keep me from tearing you to pieces with my teeth."

This time, the governor made sure to execute Galvarino. Despite heavy setbacks, the Mapuche cotinued to fight the Spaniards for another 300 years.
