But when I think of the national team, what I really think of is competing. That is what I thought on the day I was given the news of my father’s death.

I was at a camp with our national team and I decided to stay there until the end of the match the following day. I did for the country what I would never do for any club.

Observo lo que está pasando en esa estructura de Portugal ahora, y francamente, me entristece ver una gestión tan pobre de una figura legendaria.

No traes a Cristiano Ronaldo a una selección internacional, lo paseas por ahí, y luego lo tratas como si fuera solo otro joven que has sacado del equipo reserva.
Si Jorge Jesús sabía en su corazón que no tenía intención de usarlo, entonces ¿por qué lo convocó en primer lugar? ¿Para hacer un punto? Eso no es autoridad, eso es inseguridad.

Cristiano no es un chico que está empezando. No es Yamal, no es Endrick, él es Cristiano Ronaldo. Lo conozco de arriba abajo. Lo fiché como un chico de dieciocho años en 2003, y conozco la dedicación absoluta, la ética de trabajo y la obsesión por ganar que corre por sus venas. Cuando Jorge lo seleccionó a los cuarenta y uno, sabía perfectamente lo que estaba obteniendo. Nadie espera que un hombre de cuarenta y uno corra por las bandas durante noventa minutos o que esprinte como lo hacía en su mejor momento en Old Trafford.

Cuando tienes a un deportista de esa estatura en tu equipo, tienes el deber de gestionarlo con sabiduría, tacto y dignidad. No lo dejas sentado en el banquillo simplemente para demostrarle a la prensa que eres el jefe. Un verdadero entrenador no necesita socavar a su jugador estrella para probar su propia autoridad.

Si la gente ha olvidado lo que Cristiano ha hecho por el fútbol portugués en los últimos veinte años, el resto del mundo no lo ha hecho. Ese chico cargó con toda una nación sobre sus hombros durante dos décadas: los goles, los récords, la Eurocopa, la pura creencia que trajo a su país. Elevó el fútbol portugués a la mismísima cima del escenario global.

Ahora, seamos sensatos con esto. Cristiano tiene cuarenta y uno. Eso es un hecho de la vida, y el tiempo nos alcanza a cada uno de nosotros. Sus minutos tienen que ser protegidos. Habrá partidos en los que alinearlo de titular no tenga sentido táctico. No tengo ningún problema con eso en absoluto; tuve que hacer exactamente lo mismo con Bryan Robson, Steve Bruce, Ryan Giggs y Paul Scholes cuando entraron en los capítulos finales de sus carreras. No siempre les gustaba, pero lo respetaban porque se hacía con honestidad y cuidado.

Hay un mundo de diferencia entre gestionar a un ícono envejeciente con autoridad silenciosa y disminuirlo públicamente. Si lo necesitas durante veinte minutos para desbaratar una defensa obstinada, preparas su mente para esos veinte minutos. Lo haces sentir vital para ese momento específico. Pero nunca permites que la edad de un hombre te ciegue ante la pura grandeza que aún posee en momentos clave.

Jorge Jesús necesita retroceder y pensar muy cuidadosamente aquí. En la gestión, puedes ganar un argumento mezquino con un jugador el martes, y para el sábado habrás perdido la confianza de todo el vestuario. Los entrenadores vienen y van, los torneos terminan, pero los jugadores nunca olvidan cómo fueron tratados cuando la luz comenzó a desvanecerse.

No tienes que darle una camiseta de titular garantizada en cada partido, y ningún jugador es nunca más grande que el equipo; prediqué eso toda mi carrera. Pero después de todo lo que Cristiano Ronaldo ha dado a Portugal, lo tratas con la dignidad y el respeto que su sacrificio demanda".
