The German Development Cooperation Agency (GIZ) released a recent study titled "Saudi Arabia’s Potential to Enhance its Position as a Key Goods’ Provider for the Energy Transition and the Upcoming Hydrogen Economy".
As one of the lead authors Dr. Mohamed Raouf, GRC Environmental Security and Sustainability Research Program Director, along with @SebastianMSons and @TobiZumbraegel highlighted energy diversification as a core element of Saudi transformation, the energy transition as a driver to address climate change, and energy efficiency, renewable energy and hydrogen as key pillars of Saudi Arabia’s energy transition.
For #SaudiArabia, investment and expansion intorenewables are an opportunity to diversify not only energy sources but also job creation along the supply chain. Saudi Arabia aims to increase its share of renewables to 50% of the energy mix by 2030.
Hydrogen has become a top priority in the Kingdom’s energy diversification efforts. Saudi Arabia’s flagship project, #NEOM, is expected to produce 650 tons/day of green hydrogen by electrolysis and 1.2 million tons per year of green ammonia, making it one of the largest hydrogen production facilities being built globally.
In the Kingdom, both the petrochemical and mineral industries are large producers and consumers of hydrogen. Hence, they play an integral part throughout the entire hydrogen cycle including the decarbonization of many existing industrial processes. In addition, the hydrogen sector offers a variety of chances for job creation along the supply chain. The full study can be downloaded here:
