I get so angry at the Kenyan PR bubble that makes stories like these not become national or international headlines. The whole world drank the Anglo-American Kool Aid of Kenya being East Africa's largest economy, Obama's homeland, decolonizing the mind and Mau Mau, yet this has been the lived reality of most Kenyans since colonial times. The state has been killing Kenyans all the time for anything: minerals, land, votes, disagreement with politicians or even just cops who don't feel like taking people to court. And the cops were trained by the settlers and torturers of the emergency.

It's time we start calling Kenya what it is. A state that maintains power through killing citizens. Kenya is not a hub of anything except public relations and the art of keeping up appearances.

Parliament is proposing changes to the Citizenship & Immigration Act that should concern us all.

After independence, the law allowed migrants who had lived in Kenya to apply for citizenship within a limited window of 7 years post-independence.

Now the proposed amendment removes that deadline entirely and introduces a vague test of “habitual residence since 1963.”

How will anyone verify residence from 60+ years ago?

And who has never 'found' a country 6 decades post-independence?

Yet citizenship automatically means:
• The right to vote
• The right to influence elections
• The right to shape who governs Kenya
