We’ll take a wild guess that when one mentions “A Class” the first thing to spring to mind is the A45 S hyper hatch because of the sporty pedigree it holds.

The offering shown isn’t the flagship A’ but infact the base A200, here kitted with the AMG line package. Despite being an entry point into @MercedesBenz_SA model offering, it certainly doesn’t come cheap, even more so the 45 S.

Our pre-facelift unit here was first shown at the Geneva Motor Show back in 2018 and would only arrive locally in 2019 with prices starting at around R500 000.

It came as a replacement for the 3rd generation model bringing with it pebble smooth and rounded edges compared to its predecessor along with smaller turbocharged engines. If you must know, there already is a facelift available priced from R813 000.

Being an outgoing model, it’s relevance my be somewhat questionable, but please hear us out. Out there, and you reading this may even be one of them, for a lot of individuals the latest models are often out of reach for purchase, but because of brand loyalty they then look at the previous generation models hoping those would fit in their budget, and often times they do.

The next few posts on this A200 we’ll dive into what is on offer here and hopelly shed some light as to why it is worth considering even in 2025. So stay tuned.

We’ve spent some time behind the wheel of the @VolkswagenSA Golf 1.4TSI R-Line and here’s what you can expect to find in its cabin.

A heated multifunction steering wheel with actual buttons and paddle shifts in this case. Behind it is a Digital Drivers display measuring 10-inches with model-specific graphics.

At the centre of the dashboard is a 12.9-inch floating media screen with both Apple CarPlay and AndroidAuto which are wireless. It also benefits from VW’s new 30-colour ambient lighting system. Your favourite tunes will be relayed through the standard 6-speaker sound system, a @harmankardon unit is optional.

The seats are the main highlight for us, they’re covered in Anthracite with the “R-Line” insignia stitched on their backrests. The only downside to them is the lack of electrical adjustment and having to rely on manual labour to find the perfect seating position.

In addition to the above mentioned features, the R-Line Golf boasts a panaromic sunroof, keyless entry, a tire pressure monitor, park assist with park distance control, 7 airbags, a rear view camera, inductive smartphone charging, a pair of type C ports upfront and climatronic 3-zone climate control.

As a reminder, this R-Line unit is priced from R660 000.
