Wet conditions can favour midge activity, so if you haven't already, get your traps set and keep scouting!
This video is a great reminder that protecting midge tolerant wheat takes ongoing research and long-term investment. @TylerWist1#PlantBreedingMatters
Before midge tolerant wheat, yield losses of up to 90% were possible.
Today, the Sm1 gene is helping keep wheat midge in check. But relying on one line of defense is risky.
@TylerWist1 says Canada needs continued investment in wheat midge research and a refuge system breeders can actually afford to use.

In Canada, wheat production out West is 10x higher than in the East.
That means there's a gap that decides who can afford to breed eastern crops.
Hear from Josh Cowan of @GrainFarmers on why public investment has to help fill that gap.

As barley starts to head out, keep your eyes peeled for risks of Fusarium Head Blight as you scout this summer. 👀 🌾
Here's what to watch for:
- FHB risk map
- canopy remains wet late in the day
- rain and wind that can move spores to the heads
⌛ Spray timing is essential to minimizing the damage FHB can inflict on a field. Apply your fungicide quickly AFTER heads have emerged from the boot to ensure full coverage and protection.
