The VT-REEL (@SecuringOurFood) undergraduate research fellowship gives students the opportunity to study agricultural issues and plant science research through experiential learning. Participants presented their summer research at last week's @OurVtΒ Summer Research Symposium.
We wrapped the AREC Tour with a visit to the
#EasternShoreAREC where we got to visit the plant diagnostics lab π§«π¦ & field research plots π ππ½, & also check-out the drone sprayers in action!

Caitlin Cridland, a Biochemistry Ph.D. student working in Dr. Gillaspy's lab, received a departmental teaching award this past December!π
Last semester, we wrote an article about Caitlin's impact on the 2020 VT-REEL Summer Program. Give it a read:

Due to COVID-19, the VT-REEL program had to be transitioned online, but this didnβt keep Caitlin Cridland, fourth-year Biochemistry Ph.D. student and Graduate Teaching Scholar, from engaging students. Read more about Caitlin and her impact: https://t.co/4S1wpT3419
How does a parasitic plant with no leaves sense when to flower? π€ By eavesdropping, a new study shows, using a chemical signal from the dodderβs host as its own.

Thank you to all the faculty, staff & students who have helped make this years' virtual program a success! And most of all, congratulations to all the students who have been excited & enthusiastic to engage in #plantsci throughout the program, despite the online format ππ
Today we celebrated the end #VirtualVTREEL with an awards ceremony & party π₯³π Students provided superlatives for their peers (such as "Most into nematodes' and "Biggest green thumb"), gave speeches & posed with their awards π
Don't forget to tune into our students' presentations at the @OurVt Summer Research Symposium!
Students will be online for the next hour answering all your questions, & presentations will be available until 5pm today. To join the symposium, please visit https://t.co/H0oipF2HPM
Today, we wrapped up the scientific workshop series with a resume review & discussion of students' experiences at #PlantBio20 βοΈπ» Students shared their favorite talks & events- consistent favorites were the Plant-Animal Interactions sessions & the @ASPB_WiPB networking event π€
Our current #VTREEL fellows got to chat to local farmer Floyd Childress about all things #ag π§βπΎπΎππ Big thanks to Floyd for joining us today & sharing your experiences and expertiseππ§βπΎ
