Congratulations to our junior debating team on winning the semi-final against Evans this evening proposing the motion ‘This house believes that the British monarchy should be abolished’ #topteamwork 📚🦋⭐️🤎
1/2 Fabulous debate tonight between @Robertson_Sed and @Evans_Sedbergh on abolition of the monarchy. Great to hear the well researched and delivered arguments put forward by both teams.
Last night Phoenix Society debated whether plus sized models should be used by the fashion industry. Thoughtful arguments by the speakers on both sides. Great to see the youngest members of the society joining the floor debate. Powell Hall provided a grandiose venue @Sed_Academic
2/2 Pupils voted overwhelmingly to keep the name as 'Sedgwick House' has created it's own legacy giving the name new meaning. Pupils also suggested that removing the name would be to hide that aspect of our history which would dishonor those who were victims of the slave trade.
1/2 Last night the library swelled as 70 pupils and staff came together to discuss Sedbergh School's links to the slave trade and whether it is appropriate that Sedgwick House carries the name of Adam Sedgwick who benefitted substantially from the slave trade...

Last night our on site Chemist Extraordinaire Dr Worgan delivered a talk on "Smelly bottoms and luminous urine: an introduction to chemical ecology". Jokes aside it was a fascinating and engaging talk with a great turn out from pupils. @Sed_Academic
Standing room only for The Revd Sweeting's talk 'How can a scientist believe in God'. A broad discussion with thought provoking questions exploring the Big Bang, evolution, and more. The Revd received Phoenix Socs first ever standing ovation at the end! @Sed_Academic
Unsurprising that there was a great turnout for Michael Raw's fascinating exploration of Viking weaponry and warfare. So much packed in to one hour and great engagement from the pupils. Thank you Michael for such an entertaining evening! @Sed_Academic@SedberghLibrary
Lively raft debate last night with speakers representing characters from The Shining, Minecraft + Harry Potter amongst others. Well argued discussion (and impromptu visual aids!). Connie's peers voted to give her the raft spot as 'Wendy Torrance'. Well done! @Lupton_Sedbergh
A thought provoking presentation from James and Phoenix tonight. Thanks for the well researched presentation and for taking the time to answer so many questions 👍
A massive thank you to @TheLakesSchool_ for inviting @SedberghPhoenix to join their event with @guardian journalist Paul Brown. An incredible opportunity for pupils to learn what issues are being debated RIGHT NOW at #COP26. Thank you Paul for your time answering many questions
Looking forward to debating issues raised at COP26 with @SedberghPhoenix this evening. Thank you to @SedberghLibrary for hosting us in such a beautiful venue.
Fantastic first Phoenix Society meeting of the year. 'Should the Rosetta Stone be returned to Egypt?' Lively discussion, great contributions, a tight final vote determined that it should stay in the UK. Next month... 'Is COP26 fundamentally flawed' @Sed_Academic@SedberghLibrary
