A Kentucky man declared brain dead woke up during organ harvest prep — and survived.

In 2021, TJ Hoover was pronounced brain dead at Baptist Health in Richmond, KY, and prepped for organ donation. But during a cardiac test, he woke up, thrashing and visibly crying. Staff still wheeled him into the OR as part of an “Honor Walk” — while he was very much alive. Two doctors refused to continue, and the surgery was finally canceled. TJ is still alive today.

Now, 3 years later, whistleblowers have come forward — and federal investigations are underway.
