In 1987, a Pakistani family in Muridke took out a small loan of 600 rupees to help pay for a wedding.

As collateral, they offered their 4-year-old son Iqbal. He was taken to a carpet factory and put to work tying knots twelve hours a day, six days a week, chained to a loom so he would not run.

The factory owner added charges to the family debt for every mistake Iqbal made and for the bowl of rice he was fed each day, ensuring the loan could never be repaid.

He earned one rupee a day. He owed thirteen thousand.

At ten years old, Iqbal escaped during a break and found the offices of the Bonded Labour Liberation Front, a Pakistani human rights organisation that was already challenging the bonded labour system in court.

The BLLF got him to school. Within months he was speaking at labour demonstrations. Within a year he was travelling internationally.

He addressed labour conferences in Sweden and the United States, appeared on platforms with politicians and journalists, and described in plain language what happened to children in the factories he had come from.

International buyers began cancelling orders from Pakistani carpet manufacturers.

The industry complained loudly that he was destroying their business.

On Easter Sunday, April 16, 1995, Iqbal was riding a bicycle with his cousins in Muridke when he was shot dead with a shotgun. He was twelve years old.

7000 miles away in Thornhill, Ontario, a twelve-year-old Canadian boy named Craig Kielburger was searching a Toronto newspaper for the comics section when a photograph stopped him.

He read about Iqbal Masih, compared his own life to Iqbal’s, and went to school the next day and asked his classmates for five minutes at the start of homeroom. He stood up and read the article aloud. 11 children volunteered.

Free the Children was founded that afternoon in 1995, making it one of the few international human rights organisations with a founding date that can be traced to a specific breakfast table and a specific school morning.

The organisation grew into what is now called WE Charity, operating in 45 countries and involving over a million young people in its programs. Iqbal received the Reebok Human Rights Award in 1994, a year before his death, and was posthumously awarded the World’s Children’s Prize in 2000 and Pakistan’s Tamgha-e-Shujaat in 2022.
