Amazon’s The Rings of Power is exactly what this quote represents. They didn’t create something better from Tolkien’s work; they took a story and a world that already had its own identity and twisted what was good until much of it became unrecognizable. Just like the idea behind Tolkien’s words, nothing truly new was created - something good was simply corrupted.

And the problem isn’t simply changing things. The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit adaptations changed plenty of things too. The difference is that those adaptations still managed to capture the spirit of Middle-earth. The Rings of Power, on the other hand, takes Tolkien’s races, cultures and ideas and turns them into something far removed from the world he created.

The quote itself isn’t a direct J.R.R. Tolkien quote, those exact words don’t appear in his writings. But the idea behind them is something Tolkien expressed repeatedly.

And that’s exactly why this quote fits The Rings of Power so perfectly.
