There are no knee-jerk solutions to deeper economic problems. The Lagos housing problem didn't start suddenly. I did my NYSC in 1988/89, and it was already there. I ended up being a squatter at the NYSC secretariat after a dispute with an immediate family member I was living with.

My friends and I moved from the NYSC secretariat, then at Opebi, into a place in Iju, where we later discovered that the guy who brought us in was also a squatter who scammed us. He was also trying to get into the drug business, and we bailed before the real owner came and got him evicted.

I moved into another uncle's place in Ikeja before I was robbed and almost killed while going home, and decided I had enough of Lagos, then went to Benin to do my MBA. I came back again, but not fully, and lived with yet another uncle in Ikoyi off and on for many years until I was finally able to rent my own place in Lekki.

I went through everything in Lagos regarding housing. I have almost been scammed by agents, and I have sold houses. I have helped to buy and sell land and seen plots stolen by force. We used to own 21 plots on Chevron Drive, but they were taken by force.

Housing is a fundamental need, and more people need it than there are places available. This means that there is an economic incentive for those who own real estate to give them to the highest bidders.

One thing I learned since 1992 is not to make Lagos my primary place of business and sole residence. I observed all the really wealthy people from Otunba Balogun to my uncles, and I realized that they ALWAYS had other places to live and escape to. Lagos was not the only place where they had assets.

When I started going to Epe most weekends, I always saw Otunba Balogun driving to Ijebu. I don't know how that coincidence kept happening. My uncles were also always in Benin for social events most weekends when things were still sane. They later bought houses in Ghana and the UK.

Housing is expensive, and people are desperate when they have no choices. The real solution to the African urban housing problem is choice. I saw that done very well in Kenya. Many young people I know have farm or country homes outside Nairobi that they can move to when things are hectic. I am seeing it slowly happen in Accra, too.

Varian's rule also applies to housing. What the rich people enjoy today is what the poorer people will enjoy later on. Living and working in multiple locations will be what solves the Lagos congestion conundrum. Nigeria desperately needs more infrastructure in secondary cities. Better security can also prevent more rural-urban drift.

There are no simple solutions. Demolition and the construction of more skyscrapers or malls will not solve the underlying national malaise. The problem is that those responsible for policy and economic management are still playing politics and do not care about the future.

Detty December is an illusion that will soon fade; more people will soon wake up and see that there are better options elsewhere and not so far away, as I discovered in 2009. That IShowSpeed visit was a wake-up call, but as usual, denial was the response.

For younger people, split your time and look for jobs that offer flexibility. AI is going to make that choice easier soon, as the work we used to know is going to be severely disrupted. Be one of the people who use AI as a superpower to get wealthy, and not the ones impoverished by it. Listen to Lord Varian.

This pastor asks a great question. Why create such an opulent universe with an abundance of galaxies?

The question is even more pressing, considering it's not likely intelligent life exists elsewhere.

One answer is, given the laws of nature, the universe needs to be the scale (and the age) it is in order for intelligent life to exist in the one place we know for sure it does.

But it also showcases God's grandeur, power, and love. If you are a vast intelligence with endless resources, why not make such an awe-inspiring celestial estate for the people who will become your children? And it reinforces verses in scripture that tell us how capable God is, not only of managing such a universe, but having a relationship with each and every human being he created.

"He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name" - Psalm 147:4

"He marches this army of stars out each night, counts them off, calls each by name" - Isaiah 40:26

This is no small thing. We estimate there are 200 billion trillion stars just in the visible universe. If God knows *each one* of these stars by name, that ought to give us assurance that he is more than capable of knowing billions of human beings by name and having a personal relationship with each of them. Including you.

Plus, a universe like this is just exciting to look at and think about. I dunno about y'all, but I have every confidence that in the world to come, when we become heirs to the Kingdom along with Christ, we'll actually be able to explore it all.
