The idea that "all Japanese people eat KFC at Christmas" has somehow spread overseas, and I receive questions about it almost daily. The answer is no. While it is not entirely false, it is far from accurate to say "yes" either.
Of course, some people eat KFC at Christmas. But it is similar to eating pizza, steak, or sushi. Many people also buy chicken from convenience stores or supermarkets, and these places also get long lines during the Christmas season, with some even requiring reservations. By the way, Christmas-limited fried chicken from Japanese convenience stores is very delicious, and you do not have to wait in line.
In that case, it might be more accurate to say that you buy grilled chicken or fried chicken at KFC, a convenience store, or a supermarket.
Surely, there will be people who want data.
While it is impossible to provide precise figures, in 2022, a media outlet conducted a survey of 600 people aged 10 to 60.
When asked if they eat fried chicken during Christmas, about 55% said they do not, and 45% said they do. Considering that fried chicken can also be bought without waiting in line at places like 7-Eleven or supermarkets, what percentage of that 45% accounts for KFC?
I understand how KFC's massive Christmas marketing campaigns in Japan, along with its representation in anime, have led to this biased perception spreading abroad. I once joked that "older people eat KFC at Christmas," referring to generational changes. Parents likely saw KFC Christmas commercials frequently on TV. Much like Mariah Carey's Christmas songs, KFC's Christmas ads were well-known at one time. However, these days, such commercials are far less common, and even their social media presence does not seem very active. Honestly, I rarely see their commercials and feel that pizza or burger chains are putting more effort into promoting Christmas products.
That said, I acknowledge my statements were quite limited in scope. Exceptions certainly exist. If your family or friends have a tradition of eating KFC at Christmas, naturally, younger generations will follow. And yes, some people view KFC as a "Christmas staple" and choose to eat it during the season.
Still, the notion that "Japanese people eat KFC at Christmas" is as biased as saying "Japanese people always eat sushi." It feels similar to being told "Americans always eat hamburgers." When I used this example to explain it to my fans, they responded, "Well, that one is true," so I am still searching for a better analogy🫠
For the record, neither I nor my friends have ever eaten KFC at Christmas. My Japanese fans also agree that the idea of "Japanese people eating KFC at Christmas" is not true.
In conclusion:
What people eat at Christmas varies greatly 🍗
It's not accurate to say that most people eat KFC, it depends on what traditions you have with your family for Christmas, and on the region. Japan is mostly rural. A lot of no KFC gang there
But if I had to share my personal opinion, I think more people eat pizza at Christmas...Idk ahaha
