An amusing philosophy anecdote I was once told by my thesis supervisor: One time when he was a student at Goethe University Frankfurt, Richard Rorty visited the university to deliver a talk. The philosophers Karl-Otto Apel and Jürgen Habermas were both in attendance. 1/
Ancient philosophers explained to Americans:
• Parmenides: The multiplicity of burgers is an illusion. There is only one unchanging burger.
• Heraclitus: Actually, burgers are always changing. You cannot bite into the same burger twice.
• Democritus: All physical burgers are ultimately made up of tiny indivisible burgers.
• Socrates: You should care above all not for physical burgers but for burgers of the soul.
• Plato: Physical burgers are but imperfect reflections of the true, ideal burger.
• Aristotle: The purpose of cows is to become burgers. The burger is already contained in the cow.
