@RutgersAltRoute A5: My K/1 ELL students need clear examples of expectations. Without clear examples, it is challenging for them to even begin any assignment or assessment and they can become discouraged. I try my best to make assessments fun for them and provide options where possible. #AltRtEd

@RutgersAltRoute A4: For in-person and remote learning these fidget strategies are really helpful, but can become a distraction. I like Jon's emphasis on helping students make a smart decision on a fidget that will be beneficial not a distraction. #altrted

@RutgersAltRoute A3: We can create opportunities for students with ADHD and other learning disabilities by differentiated learning and providing alternative ways they can show their learning. We can incorporate movement in the classroom. #altrted

@RutgersAltRoute A2: Creating a classroom environment in which students feel comfortable advocating for themselves is key. Students should feel and know they can confide in you. Additionally, self assessments are a great way to help students discover where they need help. #AltRteEd

@RutgersAltRoute A1: A challenge that I have encountered when creating an inclusive environment is my lack of experience. As a new teacher, there is so much to learn and it can be overwhelming trying to apply all of it to benefit the students.

@RutgersAltRoute A5: School-wide initiatives that involve parents and community members that create a space for listening are critical. Those involved need emotional and social support from all of these parties. Only through direct help can we support those involved in bullying. #AltRtEd

@RutgersAltRoute A3: I use class dojo and email frequently. If there is a more concerning issue I call parents directly. I regularly communicate and collaborate with colleagues during prep times to create a safe learning environment and discuss anything that needs addressing. #AltRtEd

@RutgersAltRoute A2: The most important step is to build relationships with students where they feel comfortable speaking with you about issues. Along with that comes helping students build positive relationships with each other. Role model expected behavior for students to follow. #AltRtEd

@RutgersAltRoute A1: There is a daily routine and structure to follow, so students know what to do and expect when coming into my room. I always include social/emotional and personal-related questions in the content for students to answer and interact with their peers. #AltRtEd #Standuptobullying

@RutgersAltRoute A5 Kinvo is a great tool that lets us text parents without divulging our personal phone numbers. It even auto-translates our messages into dozens of other languages. I've gotten quite a lot of parent engagement from using Kinvo as opposed to just emailing.
