In @ft, @simon_schama cites @RichardDBrownCT:
"As Richard D Brown’s important history The Strength of a People: The Idea of an Informed Citizenry in America...points out...presidents...assumed that the security of the republic depended on the 'equation of virtue and knowledge'"
Simon Schama: Trump’s war on knowledge https://t.co/L4ohlxqfPf via @ft my piece on the history of America's appreciation of learning - and the assaults on it.

Historian here:
“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”
― Theodore Roosevelt
Historian here I know the United States siding with Russia along with Iran and North Korea seems like the end of the post world war international order but it reminds me of the slave power questioning the Declaration of Independence and American founding principles in the 1850s
Join us this Thursday for the Fall 2024 Draper Workshop! We are so excited to welcome our fantastic panelists to Storrs to discuss @ProfMSinha ‘s new book!

Former Republican Congressman @AdamKinzinger at the DNC:
“The Republican Party is no longer conservative. It has switched its allegiance from the principles that gave it purpose to a man whose only purpose is himself...Donald Trump has suffocated the soul of the Republican Party."

There is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy. Although we don’t yet know exactly what happened, we should all be relieved that former President Trump wasn’t seriously hurt, and use this moment to recommit ourselves to civility and respect in our politics. Michelle and I are wishing him a quick recovery.
