It is a good idea to match words, expressions, tone even volume, in order to speak in the others person's language. It not only proves you are listening, but is also a good way to introduce your ideas without opposition.
People rarely argue with themselves. When you can take an idea they have expressed to you and repeat it back to them, they will almost certainly be in agreement with what you just said.
