This is exactly how some women think, and they don’t see anything wrong with it. The problem is deep-rooted, and culture and religion have actually amplified it, in my opinion. Only animals get loved unconditionally.

For a man, there is usually a condition attached to loving him by nature. Culturally, men are believed to be the sole providers in most societies, and your relevance as a man is tied solely to your ability to provide for your family. If you can’t provide, you are seen as useless.

As a matter of religion, men are believed to be the maintainers of women. In Islam, Shariah mandates that, as a man, you must provide for your wife and children. It is a must. In Usul al-Fiqh, the ruling of Shariah on this is that it is wajib (compulsory). This rule has even been taken too far, to the extent that some Muslim women do not feel the need to contribute financially to their families or help a struggling man ensure that the family keeps going. This is despite the fact that it is not haram to help a struggling husband. Khadijah was richer than the Prophet (SAW). The implication of this is that men are not loved for who they are, but solely because of their ability to provide. If you can provide, you become a good brother, husband, father, friend, son, etc.

For proper context, a woman will most likely not marry you if you are broke and she cannot see any potential for you to become financially stable later. Meanwhile, a jobless and poor woman with no skill can still get married and live comfortably if she is lucky enough to meet a man who loves her for who she is.

The lesson for men from this post is to have standards. Keep your standards high. Hustle hard, legally. Make money. Don’t enter into a pity marriage with any woman. It is clear that, in this part of the world, there are conditions attached to receiving love from people around you. When you finally make money, enjoy your life and do what makes you happy. A society that tells a man to have money before he can become relevant cannot dictate how that same man should live his life once he becomes rich.
