I’ve always been fascinated by maths and have a stubborn belief that it explains the physical world in ways most people never get to see.
Eigenfolds is my attempt to make some of that visible.
This is my first, and long-overdue, generative art collection.

How I got here…
Journalist and PR specialist by training.
While on mat leave, 8 years ago, I got bored and brushed up on algebra and calculus, taught myself Matlab then Python, and studied machine learning.
By end of leave I'd written a PhD proposal which was accepted: Criminology + Computing + Maths.
(Later switched to Psychology + Computing + Maths)

4 families x 100 4x4 matrices × 6 palettes (Aurora, Sunset, Ocean, Ember, Forest, Bone) × 4 densities = 9,600.
It's a complete enumeration. No randomness and no curation. Every Pisot fractal in this parameter space exists and the token ID encodes the parameters directly.

In this collection there are 4 families with distinct characteristic polynomials:
Tetranacci · β ≈ 1.93
Pillar · β ≈ 2.11
Hawthorn · β ≈ 2.47
Bowed · β ≈ 2.59
Within each, 100 different 4×4 matrices share the polynomial: same eigenvalues, different eigenvectors, completely different shapes.

Why Rauzy?
They're a mathematical near-secret.
The 2D Tribonacci version has a Wikipedia page.
The 3D four-letter family barely has academic papers.
Almost no generative art exists in this space.
It felt unclaimed and that fascinated me.

Why this maths?
The trick is the Pisot condition.
The substitution's 4×4 matrix needs one expanding eigenvalue β > 1, and three contracting eigenvalues strictly inside the unit disk.
That spectral split is what bounds the fractal and the maths forces it to be beautiful.

Each piece is a 3D fractal generated from a substitution rule on the alphabet {a, b, c, d}.
Iterate the rule, track the running letter counts as a path in ℤ⁴, project onto a specific 3D subspace, out comes a self-similar volume of four interlocking pieces.
