Once I Understood What Sin Really Was, Everything Changed

I grew up in the church. I read my Bible, listened to sermons, and thought I understood what sin meant. But one verse hit me later in life that I had never really been taught before:

“Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.”
— 1 John 3:4

Sin is breaking God’s law, His Torah.

That one truth turned on a light for me.

All of a sudden, certain stories in the Bible started making sense in a way they never had before.

One of the first was the story of the woman caught in adultery in John 8.

I always heard this story used to say that we should not “judge” others, that none of us are perfect so we should never point out sin. But once you understand what sin actually is, you realize that this story is not about avoiding judgment at all. It is about judging rightly according to God’s Word.

Here is what the Torah actually says about adultery:
•Both the man and the woman must be brought forward and put to death.
Deuteronomy 22:22
•There must be at least two witnesses to establish guilt.
Deuteronomy 17:6
•The witnesses must be the first to throw stones.
Deuteronomy 17:7
•Cases of this kind were to be heard before the priests or judges.
Deuteronomy 19:17

When you read John 8 with that in mind, you realize the Pharisees were not really interested in carrying out God’s law. They brought only the woman. The man was missing. No witnesses came forward. There was no council or proper judgment. They were trying to trap Yeshua and make Him contradict the law.

John tells us plainly, “They said this, testing Him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him” (John 8:6).

Yeshua’s response was not dismissing the law. He turned it back on them:

“Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her” (John 8:7).

He was essentially saying, “If any of you are not breaking Torah right now, then you can begin the execution.” They all knew they were in violation. They could not carry it out without transgressing God’s instructions themselves. One by one, they walked away.

Finally, Yeshua turned to the woman and said, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more” (John 8:11).

He did not say, “Do not worry about it.” He told her to stop sinning, which is another way of saying, “Go and stop breaking God’s Torah.”

This story is not a free pass to overlook sin. It is a lesson in what righteous judgment really looks like. Yeshua upheld the law perfectly. He showed mercy without ever compromising the standard of God’s Word.

When I came to understand the true definition of sin, I could finally see the Scriptures the way they were meant to be read. Yeshua did not do away with the Torah. He lived it out. And He taught us to return to it, so that we can walk as He walked.

All I want to do is get other Christians to see the bigger picture and look at things from a spiritual perspective.

It’s easy to just go by what we see, like the world does, but we’re called to walk by faith, trusting in God’s sovereignty and holding onto Him through our struggles.

I just want to remind everyone to be careful about the alliances we form, because Scripture warns us not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers.

The real spiritual battle is against our own flesh, humbling ourselves in repentance, and drawing others to the Gospel, something we can only do through the Holy Spirit.

It’s fine to have political and cultural opinions, but I worry that too many Christians are getting so caught up in them that they’re unknowingly aligning themselves with those who oppose God, whom Satan is using as vessels of deception.
