When will you introduce a definitive DNA test for Aboriginality?

Currently, there is a three-part test of Aboriginality: being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent; identifying as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person; being accepted as such by the community in which you live, or formerly lived - all three parts apply to the test.

Currently, some elders suggest that up to a third of those claiming to be Aboriginal are not. This is supported in the growth of self-identifying 'Aboriginal' people in recent censuses which cannot otherwise be explained.

With so many advantages, financial and otherwise, of 'identifying' as Aboriginal, the system is subject to fraud. Indeed, some say that letters from elders in remote areas or ALCs can be obtained for an apocryphal slab of beer.

So, when will you introduce a definitive DNA test?

To obtain benefits from the NDIS, one must prove disability. Sometimes, upon application, those with Parkinsons or paralysis do not even qualify, ironically requiring hem to jump through metaphorical hurdles.

To obtain the myriad benefits of Aboriginality, including patently racist things like preferential triaging in hospital, why should the criteria be so slack and open to fraud?

Some North American tribes require a DNA test, so why not the same here?

We're all Australian. Why should some benefit from the accident of birth whilst others do not? Indeed, it is our egalitarianism from our convict inception that has made us the country we are.

If DNA is too difficult then here's another solution: treat us all the same, with welfare and special privileges reserved for those in need and on the basis of merit, not race.
