Millions of buildings in the EU use district heating for heating and hot water.

Looking forward to a great day talking about #districtheating decarbonisation @EuroheatPower
summit.
Commisioner @KadriSimson kicking it off with a strong call to action for member states: 'phase-out fossil fuel subsidies in heating and cooling'

@heatpolicyrich District heat prices can also be very different between regions/localities within a country. Probably not too relevant for UK :) , but a precedent of people in cheaper locations (cheap heat source, easy network construction) having lower prices.
What’s the cost of not renovating?
EU #BuildingsDirective negotiation is happening now. Final #FF55 file can kickstart renovations in the worst buildings – for climate & society
But all I hear are (scare) stories on the cost of renov.
What if it costs more not to?

The data is now official: 3 years’ worth of rain fell within two days. Scientists on Greek TV discussing the possibility of the formation of new, permanent lakes in the area. It is a new planet. #ClimateAction#ClimateCrisis#climatecatastrophe
Making our energy infrastructure ready for net zero is critical for the energy transition.
❓But what does this mean?
❓How do we get there?
❓What are gaps and solutions?

Offices with bad energy performance in #NL are losing value fast! On average -20% , buildings with label G even -40%.
Consequence of the mandatory energy performance standard #MEPS, a strong incentive to renovate.
But, with low demand (homeworking), renovations unlikely.
👏👏👏 @Grupa_PGE wants to install large heat storage facility and 4 large heat pumps to supply heat to Gdańsk district heating network.

A small boon during the latest heatwave:
Solar power 🌞and airconditioning 🧊 are a great match.
Daily production of solar peaks around noon, just when cooling needs are highest, helping grids cope during extreme heat.

NEW BRIEFING JUST OUT
Decompression: Policy and regulatory options to manage the gas grid in a decarbonising UK
TLDR: As we decarbonise heating, the gas networks represent a significant liability for UK plc, and the sooner we act the better. 🧵

@AdrianHiel The famous DH network that supplies the Kings palace and botanical gardens 😂 (ok to be fair, it also supplies a local shopping centre). Additionally the channel water could be used to feed into a heat pump!
There is a huge potential to replace fossil gas in buildings with waste heat!
Here in Brussels for example we could use heat from: the metro, datacentres, waste water treatment, and food retail.
Check out your own city ⬇️⬇️

As we phase-out fossil gas, cities will turn to locally available #cleanheat sources
#Districtheating systems can be a great way to deliver this heat to buildings. But, requires coordination and large infrastructure investments.
How to make this happen?
🧵⬇️
To support #districtheating we need to implement local heat #planning, build societal trust & update regulations. Otherwise, the switch to #cleanheat will be more costly & important system benefits may fail to materialise, warns @SemOxe from @RegAssistProj https://t.co/pfDiZWKlgP
4/ Finally, we need to act quick
People expect clear direction and clarity on how to heat their homes in the future
#heatpump markets are booming (luckily) across Europe
District heating needs to keep up and show it can compete on price and speed of decarbonisation
