Getachew Asefa, the notorious former Ethiopian spy chief, is reportedly orchestrating the detention of dissenting senior Tigrayan generals and intelligence officers.

His reemergence as the de facto leader of Tigray is a deeply consequential development, not only for the current war, but for what comes after.

Getachew previously emerged as Ethiopia’s de facto power broker following Meles Zenawi’s death, repeatedly undermining Meles’ successors, Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn and TPLF Chairman Debretsion Gebremichael. At the time, at least, his efforts to monopolize power were challenged by the military brass under General Samora Yenus.

Today, however, with many senior political, military, and intelligence figures having abandoned the TPLF, and others reportedly being detained, there appear to be far fewer guardrails capable of constraining Getachew Asefa’s highly radical positions and their potential influence on the direction of the war.

That is what makes his reemergence particularly consequential.
